Welcome!, a Ceramics Shop Portrait Painting

This piece, a ceramics shop portrait painting, depicts an entrepreneur and ceramic artist standing at the doorway of her pottery shop, welcoming a customer to browse her handcrafted work. The motivation for this work is to honor women entrepreneurs in business, bring additional visibility to their efforts, and encourage more women to explore business opportunities.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Welcome! was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. As with every piece in the gallery, work began with a detailed sketch of the subject and environment, followed by a color-blocking, layer to establish base tones creating an underpainting. From there, a multi-layer process refined values and rendered detail in the skin, hair, fabric, and textures.

CHALLENGE:

The floral blouse with its detailed pattern and lace-embroidered collar was the strongest challenge of this piece. A multi-layer approach set the tonal color shifts of the fabric across the body and its folds. A modified texture brush gave the fabric a cotton-weave surface, and a pass with the Liquify tool aligned the grain to the garment’s curves. Each flower and vine element was built in additional layers, with stronger shading beneath the petal edges for a raised, dimensional look. The neckline and lace were rendered in multiple layers as well, finished with a “Satin Stitch” brush worked in a repeated curved motion to create the lacy border.
