ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Nature, a Good Book, and a Park Bench was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The piece was built in layered passes, establishing the figure and bench first before developing the surrounding foliage, water, and dappled light filtering through the tree canopy. Particular attention was given to creating depth through overlapping layers of greenery — foreground grasses, midground shrubs, and background trees — each rendered with distinct value and detail level to keep the eye moving naturally toward the water. The reflective quality of the lake surface was built through careful value shifts to suggest gentle movement without overpowering the stillness of the scene.

CHALLENGE:

Identified challenge: Creating convincing depth and atmospheric perspective across multiple layers of foliage (foreground grass, midground plants, background trees) without the greens flattening into a single undifferentiated mass.

How it was handled: Each foliage layer was assigned a distinct color value range and level of detail — sharper, higher-contrast rendering in the foreground grasses, softer and slightly desaturated tones in the background trees. This created natural atmospheric recession, keeping the scene readable as deep, layered space rather than a flat backdrop, while the dappled light breaks helped tie the layers together as a cohesive environment.
