The Comfort of Tea

Tea is a cherished tradition in my family — a ritual of gathering around the kitchen table with my sisters, sharing stories and laughter over a cup. This still-life honors that comfort: a relief-flowered teal tea canister with its wooden, metal-flowered lid, a wheel-thrown blue teapot, a silver filigree teaball, a wooden spoon dusted with dried tea leaves, and a pastel woven table runner scattered with dried tea and fresh mint. This is the comfort of tea.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Artist’s Process: The Comfort of Tea was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The piece builds traditional painting’s depth and texture through layered digital brushwork — beginning with a structural line drawing, then color blocking and value refinement. Detail work focused on the openwork pattern of the silver filigree teaball, the woven texture of the table runner, the fine strands of dried tea leaves, and the glossy glaze on the canister and teapot.

CHALLENGE: The intricate silver filigree teaball and chain demanded an extremely fine brush to render the pierced pattern accurately — the small holes that let hot water pass through the tea leaves inside.
