Artist’s Process:

Miles Neil Portrait was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This piece began with a detailed sketch of the subject, with attention to his specific hairstyle. The sketch was followed by color blocking each element to create a base for the building of the details. A multi-layer approach was utilized to build up the skin tones, starting with the darker areas and building up to varying colors of the skin where it is affected by temperature, blood flow to the skin, and lighting effects. The background features a dark teal-green abstract design to reflect the subject’s favorite color.

Challenge:
The challenge for this portrait was to capture the unique haircut of the subject. The hair had been styled with the front section brushed up and stiffened with product, while the rest of the style was smooth and clean-cut.
The process began with an initial strand study over the initial sketch. A modified “Fine Hair” brush set to full opacity and 5% size was used. This brush is configured to create several thin and flowing strands in one brush stroke. This layer defines the direction of each section of the hair style and becomes a guide for the following strand layers.
A layer below this initial layer was utilized to create a soft, neutral color wash using the Procreate Soft Airbrush at 50% opacity and 10% size. This layer provides a base for style and supports a subtle volume effect for the strands layers as they are created.
Multiple layers added above the initial strands layer contained passes of multiple colors adding depth, shade, and light to the overall hair style.
Switching to a modified hair brush with a shorter stroke capacity and a slightly larger diameter to each line in the strand bundle was used to create the accented forehead section of the style. This section was swept up and over the established layers and repeated the multi-layer process for adding mixed color strands, shadows, and light. A final layer set to “Add” mode was used to intensify the highlight color, and the same brush and settings were used to create a ridge at the top of the accented forehead style to enhance the appearance of the raised section of the hairstyle.
