John at the Game Portrait — Commission

Portrait John at the Game is a commissioned painting of a young man, a dedicated hockey fan, captured in a moment of pure excitement at the arena. Surrounded by the energy of the crowd and the action on the ice, he’s fully immersed in cheering for his favorite team. This portrait preserves that feeling — the atmosphere, the excitement, and the joy of a day spent at the game — as a lasting reminder to revisit again and again.

Artist’s Process:

John at the Game Portrait was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This piece began with a detailed sketch of the subject and the specific sports team colors and emblems on the hat and jersey worn by the subject. The sketch was followed by color blocking each elements of both subjects to create a base for the building of the details. A multi-layer approach was utilized to build up the skin tones starting with the darker areas and building up to varying colors of the skin where it is affected by temperature, blood flow to the skin, and lighting effects on the figures. Color choices for the clothing in this portrait were chosen to exactly match the team colors.

Challenge:
Clothing and the material selected for a portrait can pose a challenge, as demonstrated in this artwork. The team hat and jersey necessitated adherence to the precise team colors, with patches and emblems on the hat featuring logos and text in specific fonts, shapes, and other distinctive elements unique to this team. The primary challenge was replicating the exact logos and text of the cap’s patches and stitching.
A comprehensive sketch of each patch and logo on the cap served as a blueprint for recreating the details in the portrait. Color blocking for each detail was established on a foundation layer to provide support for the intricate details. The logo image and text content were painted beneath the 20% transparent sketch layer using the Procreate “Fine Tip” brush within the Inking category set to full opacity and size.
Upon completion of the logos and patches, two of the patches located on the curved cap brim were adjusted using the Procreate “Transform” tool set to “Warp” to bend the images to the shape of their position on the curved brim. Employing this tool after the images were finalized permitted every element of the patch images to maintain its relative position to the other elements within the patch as it was reshaped to conform with the brim’s contours.
