Montauk Osprey Painting.
The Montauk Osprey painting was inspired by an Osprey spotted nesting on a platform in Montauk, at the eastern tip of Long Island, during a photography trip. Ospreys build these massive stick nests atop tall platforms or dead trees near water, returning to the same site year after year to raise their young. This bird’s piercing yellow eyes, surveying the territory from a spectacular vantage point, became the inspiration for this close-up portrait.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:
Montauk Osprey was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This technique replicates traditional painting’s depth and texture through layered digital brushwork. The process began with careful structural drawing, followed by multiple rounds of color blocking, value refinement, and detail work on feather texture to capture the species’ appearance and temperament. Shadow and light were built up using multiple Procreate layers and specific brushes, and the background stays true to the original reference photograph from Shadowmyst Art’s personal collection.
CHALLENGE:
The greatest challenge was capturing the intensity of the Osprey’s gaze at such close range — a tight portrait crop leaves no room for error in the eyes, which had to convey both sharp predatory focus and convincing wetness and depth. Careful attention was paid to catchlight placement and subtle color variation within the iris, while the surrounding shaggy, wind-ruffled feather texture was built up in layers to keep the intensity of the eyes from feeling isolated against a soft, flat face.
