ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Cape Primrose Streptocarpus, Harlequin Blue was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This piece was inspired by Shadowmyst Art’s indoor garden. This Cape Primrose, scientific name Streptocarpus, has a stunning bloom that has been compared to a miniature orchid. This cultivar, Harlequin Blue, is a pleasing combination of soft purple and pale yellow with purple, ruffled edge. The leaves are heavily textured and a strong green, with color intensity varying by cultivar; they are very long and thin. It blooms several times a year to every indoor gardener’s delight.

CHALLENGE:

The leaves on the Cape Primrose are dramatically long, with strong green color and heavy texture. To accomplish the look of the texture on the leaves a base color was laid down and multiple layers added over the base layer. The color’s tonal values were established on the first of these layers followed by delicate lines painted with a Procreate “Single Hair” brush set to size 1% with full opacity following the path of the veins on the leaves. An additional layer began detailing the shadows and highlights to create the peaks and valleys of the surface texture. The final layer added highlights with a Procreate soft airbrush at 6% size with 50% opacity with a pale yellow color setting the layer  blend mode to the “Add” to increase the color intensity of the highlight color.
