Pet Portrait Boxers, Mugsy and Maggie Mae are inseparable — a brindle-and-white Boxer and his younger, relentlessly joyful tan companion, bonded by the effortless loyalty only dogs seem to manage. Their favorite place in the world is a local baseball field, where they run, chase, and simply exist at full speed.

Mugsy is the elder statesman: larger, calmer, watchful — carrying the quiet dignity of a dog who has seen things. Maggie Mae is pure energy given form — tri-color, tongue out, always delighted. Together, their personalities speak for themselves: one steady, one sparkling, both completely themselves.

This commission was painted from reference photos provided by their devoted pet mom, who wanted their bond — and their favorite place — preserved together.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Mugsy and Maggie Mae was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The commission began with careful compositional planning to place two large, strong-featured subjects naturally on a single canvas — balanced in visual weight without either dog diminishing the other. Each subject was developed through structural drawing, color blocking, value refinement, and fine detail work. The atmospheric background, developed from client-provided reference photos of the baseball field, was kept intentionally loose to hold both subjects together under a unified sky.

CHALLENGE:

The dual-subject format introduced a challenge beyond typical single-portrait work: Mugsy’s brindle coat and Maggie Mae’s tri-color markings require entirely different brushwork, yet both had to read under the same warm sunset light without feeling painted separately and assembled. The brindle demanded stroke-by-stroke attention to how the pattern wraps the skull and musculature. Maggie Mae’s bold facial markings — black mask, white blaze, tan — required precise edge control to maintain the graphic clarity that defines her face. Reconciling both under one light source was the piece’s central technical hurdle.
