ARTIST’S PROCESS:
Radiant was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. Each portrait begins with structural drawing to establish accurate proportions, followed by layered color blocking, value refinement, and detailed work on skin, light, and texture.
The background was developed to suggest a traditional canvas surface — a textured ground that anchors the luminous figure without competing with it. Left-side lighting draws the eye directly to the subject’s expression and exceptional smile.
CHALLENGE:
The terracotta head wrap presented the primary technical challenge. Rendering volumetric fabric folds with believable directional highlights required building up multiple layers in careful sequence — each pass adding depth and shadow to achieve the sculptural, three-dimensional quality of tightly wrapped textile. Too flat and it reads as decoration; too busy and it competes with the face. The balance between the two is what makes the wrap feel real.
