Everyone loves a snow day — an unplanned reason to stay home, warm and cozy. You sit and watch the snow fall, your journal open on the desk beside a candle and a steaming mug of cocoa with mini marshmallows. Everything you need is within reach, so you pick up your glasses and pen and begin writing about your unexpected time off.

ARTIST’S PROCESS: Snow Day Journal Entry was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The work replicates traditional painting’s depth and texture through layered digital brushwork — structural drawing, color blocking, value refinement, and detail work on each object for substance and believability. Multiple Procreate layers and select brushes define the small details of each object, bringing them to life. This semi-autobiographical work was inspired by the 8-foot snow drifts outside on January 26th.

CHALLENGE: Create journal binder rings with silver metal and uniform spacing. Sketch, paint, and add metal shine using the “Add” option in the highlights layer to increased the shine in the grey color to define the metal’s authenticity resulting in one ring. Duplicate the layer and position each to match the journal.
