Succulent Paintings Series includes a selection of succulents from different genera. Included in the series is the plant featured here, the Sedeveria Pink Ruby. This succulent has large and puffy heart shaped petals colored a soft green with maroon spots across the top of each petal giving the plant its name “Pink Ruby”. Easy to grow and care for it is an unusual and attractive addition to any succulent enthusiast’s collection.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:
Succulent paintings series – Sedeveria Pink Ruby was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. Each painting in this set of 4 replicates traditional paintings’ depth and texture through layered digital brushwork. A careful structural drawing was made detailing the shape, leaves, stems and patterns and planter for this piece. The next step was color blocking for each leaf grouping on separate layers to create depth through size, deepening colors and highlighting and shading. The background wash was placed on layers below the plant’s foundation layers to set the tone for this plant’s colors. Above the leaf base color, multiple rounds of detail work and value refinement created the leaf details for each layer. A final set of layers perfecting shadow and light was created using a Procreate soft, round watercolor brush to finalize the Sedeveria Pink Ruby of the Succulent Paintings series.
CHALLENGE:
Since this series includes 4 completely different plant types, colors and shapes with their unique planters, the background details had to be chosen to accentuate the features of each particular plant while keeping the series connected. A soft watercolor wash of soft raspberry was chosen for the Sedeveria Pink Ruby to compliment the plants tight rosette shape, rich green leaves with magenta edges and the magenta decorative mug planter. To achieve this watercolor style background Procreate watercolor brushes were used to lay down a main background wash below the the foundation layer and a Gaussian Blur of 10% was used to further blur the edges.
