Profusion of Coleus Impressionistic Painting.

This vibrant coleus plant painting captures the dense, jewel-toned foliage of a mature Coleus in full summer color, layering rich pinks, golds, and greens to convey the plant’s natural depth.

Coleus thrives in containers and shaded garden beds, prized for its vivid variegated leaves more than its small, inconspicuous flowers — though those blooms do attract pollinators. Varieties range from compact, foot-tall plants to sprawling types spreading over 3 feet, making it a versatile favorite for patios, porches, and garden terraces.

In Profusion of Coleus, layered shades and blended brushwork build depth across the canvas, echoing how real Coleus foliage catches and holds light in a garden setting.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Profusion of Coleus Impressionistic Painting was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro, building the depth and texture of traditional painting using layered digital brushwork. Designed in a pseudo-impressionistic style, the piece evokes the visual impact of a garden filled with vibrant Coleus plants.

The composition began with a detailed structural drawing of the leaves, meticulously capturing the intricate color patterns of each leaf. Multiple layers were created beneath the dimmed sketch layer to color block each section of the leaf design across the entire canvas. Additional layers above each color-blocked layer were used to add lighting effects and shadows using a custom Procreate watercolor brush at 6% opacity and between 1% and 5% size, corresponding to the section of the leaves being painted. These layers created the texture, position, and flow of the visible and overlapping leaves.

A new set of layers was created over all, and a Procreate Fine Tip brush from the Inking selection was used to add the veins and to define the color borders of the leaves’ patterns.

Merging the established leaf layers into one, this layer was duplicated five times beneath the main layer. Each of these layers was changed to a different layer blending mode, and the position was changed on the canvas using the Procreate transition tool to rotate, resize, and deform each layer for variety. These changes created depth to the foliage and altered the color tone, transparency, and color blending effects on the other layers. This was done to represent the wide variations in colors and patterns that this plant offers and to introduce the impression of the depth and density of a fully mature Coleus profuse with leaves.
The background was created in a finely blended abstract mixture of the Coleus colors to add richness to the overall feeling while allowing the main focus layer and the receding layers of leaves to remain center stage.

CHALLENGE:

With dozens of overlapping leaves in varied colors, the greatest challenge was avoiding a flat, cluttered result. This was resolved by duplicating the merged leaf layers five times and applying different blending modes and transformations — rotation, resizing, and deformation — to each. This built genuine visual depth and color variation across the foliage, giving the piece the layered richness of a real, mature Coleus planting rather than a single flat pattern.
