ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Bloom Series – Stargazer Lily was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The Stargazer Lily, like each painting in this set of 6 paintings, replicates traditional paintings’ depth and texture through layered digital brushwork. A careful structural drawing was made detailing the shape, leaves, stems and patterns for this piece. The background color of neutral light grey with a watercolor texture pattern and a gentle sweep of small, irregular dots in a mix of medium grey and cream color spread across the canvas behind the blooms to add movement to the piece. This background is uniform across all 6 pieces in the series to unite the series. The next step was color blocking for each petal and leaf group on separate layers to create depth through size, deepening colors, light and shadow and clean edges. Above the leaf base color, multiple rounds of detail work and value refinement created the leaf details for each layer. A final set of layers perfecting shadow and light was created using a Procreate soft, round watercolor brush to finalize the Stargazer Lily plant of the Bloom Series.

CHALLENGE:

The intricate appearance of this bloom’s six petals, characterized by their elongated cream and crimson to soft pink hues and delicately ruffled edges, presented the most formidable challenge in this artistic endeavor. The soft cream base of each petal was carefully applied using a gentle Copic Procreate brush, which was smoothed from the center of the bloom to the tip of each petal. Subsequently, the same brush, with a 40% opacity, was employed to streak the delicate pinks building to the soft crimson of the accent color along the length of each petal, leaving a distinct margin of cream plain on the entire edge of each petal. Multiple passes of the pink color, progressively increasing the opacity of the brush with each pass, effectively revealed the subtle light to dark variation of the accent color across the petal surface. Careful shading along the edge of each petal, utilizing a brush with a slightly larger dimension and lightly applied pressure at intervals, created the subtle rippled appearance of the petal’s edges. Finally, a final layer was applied using a small watercolor brush set to 10% opacity, which was utilized to add a delicate glaze of highlights in specific areas across the bloom.
