ARTIST’S PROCESS:
“Joy in the Moment” is a painting created using Procreate on a 13-inch iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil Pro. The painting commences with structural drawing to establish accurate proportions. Subsequently, layered color blocking, value refinement, and detailed work on skin, hair, and light are executed. The pale blue color palette was selected to convey the clarity and crispness of a winter day. The subject, depicted in a soft painterly style with loose, flowing hair that moves with the crisp breeze, wears a soft cowl neck sweater that enhances the winter ambiance of the piece.
The background features an atmospheric, impressionistic scene in clear blue, with light gray and white clouds that complement the clear, cool atmosphere of the winter season.
CHALLENGE:
The intricate weave of the cowl neck sweater presented a significant challenge for this piece. A distinct layer was established for the cream base color. The separate layer above contained the delicate details of the sweater’s wool strands, following the natural curves of the cowl collar and shoulder of the subject. To enhance the soft and delicate appearance of the mohair, the Gaussian Blur tool was applied to this layer at a 6% setting, softening the strands and stitches. Additionally, a layer was created to shade the edges of the knitted rows, effectively separating them and contributing to the overall design of the sweater.
