An Invitation, Commission Example

Across the room, you notice you are being watched. The look is thoughtful — calm, relaxed, unhurried. A breath of air catches wisps of her hair, creating movement in opposition to the stillness she radiates. She rests her chin in her hand and simply holds your gaze. Is this an invitation? A portrait like this captures the moment before the answer.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

An Invitation was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro, building the piece started with a detailed sketch followed by a base of color blocking for each element of the composition. Starting with that foundation layered digital brushwork across skin, hair, and fine detail were the next steps. The amber eyes were the technical priority — iris color, catchight, and warmth required multiple refinements passes to achieve their luminous quality. Flyaway hair strands were rendered with varying opacity, some catching light, some in shadow, for natural rather than decorative movement. Freckle detail across the nose and cheeks adds grounding realism, while the soft, center-lit background keeps all focus on the subject’s steady, composed gaze.

CHALLENGE:

Flyaway hair strands — rendering individual fine strands crossing the face required varying opacity, curve and light response for each strand to feel like natural hair movement rather than a decorative overlay. Each strand needed to interact correctly with the skin tone beneath it. This was accomplished with a modified Procreate brush to apply multiple thin lines in one stroke creating 6 clustered, thin strands for each stroke. A multi-layered approach was used build up the hair beginning with a strand layer creating the style and flow of the hair followed by a layer of watercolor wash underneath to fill in the volume. Returning above the initial strand layer more layers were added for each pass of color strands to add different color tones, shadows and light creating the flow and movement of the hair while maintaining the individual strands effect.
