The Easy Company painting was inspired by the daily life of a middle-aged man. A genuine smile like this one doesn’t happen on command — it comes from a good story, the right company, a moment worth remembering. This portrait captures exactly that: the warmth in his eyes, the humor in his expression, and the lived-in character that makes a face truly worth painting.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

The Easy Company painting was on a 13-inch iPad Pro, utilizing the Apple Pencil Pro. Each portrait commenced with structural drawing to ascertain accurate proportions. Subsequently, layered color blocking, value refinement, and meticulous attention to skin, hair, and light were given. Special emphasis was placed on the skin texture and facial hair, employing multiple layers to construct skin tones and texture through watercolor washes over the base color and the Procreate “Noise” brush to simulate pores and imperfections. Facial lines were rendered with a thin, pointed Procreate brush in a dark skin tone, subsequently blended to create the shadow of the lines and a highlight line to accentuate the peak of the wrinkles. Facial hair was also created on individual layers, commencing with the darker hairs and selectively adding grey hairs in individual short strokes, adhering to the contours of the face and features.

The background presents an atmospheric, impressionistic scene—loosely suggesting an outdoor gathering—which maintains the focus firmly on the subject’s face and expression.

CHALLENGE:

Facial hair at this level of detail is one of the most demanding elements in portrait painting. The beard and mustache required individual strands rendered across multiple layers—each pass building directional growth, color variation between dark brown and silver, and the subtle way beard hair catches light differently than skin or fabric. Too uniform, and it loses realism; too chaotic, and it loses form. Achieving both simultaneously across the full beard required careful sequencing from dark foundations through to the finest highlight strands.
