Christine Portrait Painting — Commission.

Christine Portrait Painting is a commissioned portrait of a young woman who has dedicated her life to rescuing animals. She fosters kittens and disabled cats, cares for them, and finds them forever homes. Christine collaborates with numerous Long Island animal rescue organizations, assisting them in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs to manage feral cat colonies and in the rescue of animals caught in hazardous situations. Additionally, Christine has worked as a Veterinary Assistant at Animal Emergency Hospitals.

Christine’s portrait was commissioned by her family to capture her caring and dedicated personality.

Artist’s Process:

Christine Portrait Painting was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This piece began with a detailed sketch of the subject.
A multi-layer approach was utilized to build up the skin tones, starting with the darker areas and building up to varying colors of the skin where it is affected by temperature, blood flow to the skin, and lighting effects on the features — including the change of skin tone under the glasses lenses, the shadows of the glasses frame and arms on the skin, and the pressure on the skin created by the nose cushions.
The subject’s hair was created in multiple layers to mix hair strands of different shades and lighting effects and prevent a flat appearance. A foundation layer of a soft watercolor wash was used to build the strand layers, setting a base color and creating volume under the strands.
The layered approach was used to build up the folds of the blouse over the base color and to add the flower pattern as a final touch.

Challenge:
Painting wire-rimmed glasses in a portrait presents a unique challenge. Achieving realistic glasses and their impact on the subject’s features necessitates a delicate balance between lens transparency, metallic reflections, and skin distortion caused by lenses. Employing a layered approach is crucial in this process, enabling the seamless integration of the glasses onto an established portrait while preserving the subject’s features and personality.
 
Following a meticulous sketch of the subject, including the precise placement of the glasses and the areas of the face affected by their frames, nose pads, and arms, the lens frames were meticulously painted using the Procreate Technical Pen brush at 100% opacity. The frames were sized between 5% and 7% to correspond to their width, hinges, and arms. The initial layer established the base color for the silver metal color of the frames. A subsequent pass of medium gray created the lighting effects on the metal of the frames. Finally, a third color pass was executed using pure white color and the Procreate Light Pen brush to create a strong metallic highlight along the silver frames, detailing the light source striking the glasses frames.
 
On a separate layer, the Procreate Selection tool set to “Freehand” mode was employed to define the shape of the lens on one side. The selected area was then filled with solid white color. The layer mode was subsequently changed from “Normal” to “Color” mode, resulting in a clear opacity with a subtle hint of color remaining over the subject’s eyes, effectively defining the glass lens.
 
The completed lens layer was then duplicated, rotated horizontally, and positioned over the second lens frame. Utilizing the “Transform” tool, the overall size and angle of the lens were adjusted to accommodate the change in perspective from one side to the other.
 
With the second lens in place, a final pass of white was applied on a new layer using the Procreate Soft brush set to 5% opacity and 3% size. This created a soft reflection on each lens, following the light source on the subject.
