Coat of Arms Print — O’Shea Family was commissioned by a member of the O’Shea family. A family crest, incorporated into a coat of arms, originated in 12th-century Europe as practical battlefield identification for knights in heavy armor. Over time, these unique visual designs evolved into hereditary symbols of lineage, status, and family history, regulated by official heraldic authorities. The resource for this commission was provided by the client in the form of an embroidered version on cloth. Research based on the resource provided and tracing the family name added a selection of elements included in the crest over the generations. Conferring with the client, a final version was approved and the painting was created.

MEDIUM:

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Coat of Arms Print was painted in Procreate on a 13-inch iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The process commenced with a thorough review of the source image provided by the client, followed by extensive research to identify potential variations of the crest. Once the details of the crest were finalized with the client, a detailed sketch was meticulously created in Procreate. Subsequently, the sketch was reduced to 20% opacity to facilitate painting using it as a guide. A layer was subsequently created beneath the sketch layer, and color blocking commenced, defining each element of the crest on separate layers with solid base colors.

A multi-layer approach was employed above each base layer to begin detailing the shield, helmet, banners, and the black swan rousant with a red beak and legs. This approach allowed for the gradual accumulation of light, shade, and intricate details. Once each element was completed, the layers were merged down to produce the final print.

CHALLENGE:

Most family crests incorporate an element of armor or weapon into their design. This crest featured a silver helmet positioned above the shield, with the black swan rousant standing atop it. The challenge for this piece was the metal of the helmet.

Following the sketch, the details were built up on layers above the base color, commencing with a medium grey color. On a subsequent layer above the medium grey, a lighter grey was applied using the Procreate soft brush at 75% opacity and 5% size, initiating the shadowing on the helmet and defining its contours. Additional layers utilized the Procreate Technical Brush, starting at full opacity and 3% size in black, to outline the edges and ornamental details on the helmet. The opacity of the brush was subsequently reduced to add contour lines on the metal, representing the stronger reflections of the helmet elements on the metal surface. A final layer was created above the completed layers to add reflective highlights along the edges of the helmet, where light would strike the metal, emphasizing specific sections of the helmet and enhancing the perception of depth.
