Shea was a Shetland Sheepdog — a Sheltie — who spent ten years as the beloved heart of his family. From puppyhood to his last days, he was their constant companion, their only child, the warm presence that filled every room he entered.
Shelties are known for their intelligence, their sensitivity, and the particular depth of their loyalty. Shea was all of these things. He was also, as many Shelties are, vulnerable to the hereditary heart conditions that affect the breed — and his loss, when it came, was profound.
This portrait was commissioned as a memorial — a permanent record of who Shea was, how he looked, and how much he was loved. It is an honor to have been trusted with it.
ARTIST’S PROCESS: Painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil Pro, this memorial commission was approached with particular care — the goal was not simply likeness, but the preservation of a presence.
The work follows the layered progression of structural drawing, color blocking, and value refinement characteristic of this portfolio’s approach to painterly realism. Shea’s sable and white Sheltie coat — with its long flowing outer fur and dense undercoat — required sustained directional brushwork to capture the natural movement and volume the breed is known for.
The botanical background — layered grasses, leaf forms, and plant silhouettes in warm greens — was chosen to place Shea in a living, natural world. For a memorial portrait, the setting carries extra meaning: not a specific room or yard frozen in time, but an timeless green space where the subject simply belongs.
CHALLENGE: A memorial portrait carries a weight that a standard commission does not. The reference photos are finite — what exists is all there is — and the responsibility to the subject, and to the people who loved him, is correspondingly greater.
Technically, Shea’s sable coat presented the characteristic Sheltie challenge: continuous tonal gradation across warm mahogany, brown, gold, and cream, transitioning without hard edges across the face and chest. Capturing that softness while maintaining enough contrast to read as three-dimensional required careful, sustained value work across multiple detail passes.
The botanical background required a different kind of attention — integrating a semi-illustrative natural setting with the painterly realism of the portrait, keeping the background present and beautiful without competing with Shea’s face and eyes, which needed to remain the emotional center of the piece.
