ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Ocean Ease was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The work builds using layered digital brushwork — structural drawing, color blocking, value refinement, then detailed work on skin, wind-lifted hair, and light on the woman. The background carries equal narrative weight to the figure: waves spill toward the shore where she rests, soaking in the sun and salt air.

CHALLENGE:

The clear green waves reaching the shore were the primary challenge in this piece. The process began with a sketch depicting the waves’ motion, then color blocking in light aqua green. Layers of white watercolor strokes followed the water’s motion and the wave’s curvature to build transparency, with additional layers defining the pattern of light and foam within the curls. A Procreate texture brush, dabbed sporadically along the water’s edge, created the foam where the wave meets the shore. A final layer extended the water using a watercolor wash blended with sand and gray tones, suggesting the light film of wet sand left behind by the previous wave.
