ARTIST’S PROCESS:

This beach sunset painting, titled At the End of Her Day, was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The artwork was constructed in layered passes, beginning with the ocean horizon and sunset. The expanse of sand, beach grass, and rope fencing were then added, progressing toward the foreground. Finally, the subject, a woman in a white dress and straw hat, was detailed into the scene.

The composition was initially established through a detailed sketch layer, setting the parameters for the sunset, shoreline, and sand. The beach grass, wood posts with rope dividers, and the figure of the woman were carefully rendered, creating a harmonious balance.

To facilitate color blocking, the sketch layer was reduced to 10% opacity, serving as a subtle guide for the subsequent layers. Each element was individually colored, gradually building up shadows, light, and details.

The sky, sunset, water, and sand were constructed using a Procreate Soft Airbrush at varying opacities and sizes. The Procreate Fine Tip Pen brush, set to 2–5% size and full opacity, was used to add distinct features to each layer.

For the sunset, a layer set to “Add” mode was used with the Procreate Medium Airbrush at 2% size and 30% opacity. A glaze of enhanced color was applied with light pressure to the center of the setting sun, creating a vibrant orange-to-yellow-to-white glow.

The beach grass, wood posts, rope, and the figure of the woman were initially built using a multi-layer approach. Soft airbrush strokes defined lighting effects, while the Procreate Fine Tip brush added texture to the wood, rope strands, and the figure’s hair, hat, and clothing.

The final steps involved using Procreate’s “copy canvas” feature, pasting it above the working layers, grouping those layers into a single folder for future reference, and adding a watercolor paper texture over the pasted copy to enhance the composition.

CHALLENGE:

The challenge for this piece was the rope texture running between the wood fence posts and through the holes at the top of each post. Following the sketch layer, the base color for the rope was established using the Procreate Dry Ink brush at 75% opacity and 13% size in light grey. The next layer began the rope’s texture with a medium tan color, using the Procreate “Little Pine” brush at 5% size and 55% opacity. Short strokes with light brush pressure created the appearance of frayed rope edges along the inside edges of the base color. These two layers were blurred by 5% using the Procreate Gaussian Blur tool to soften the appearance of the threads.

Two additional layers, one dark brown and one pale yellow, were used to add the rope’s twisted-thread appearance with short, curved strokes slanting along its length, using the Procreate “Flowing Hair” brush at 5% size and 90% opacity. A final layer, using the same brush at 25% opacity and set to “Add” mode, laid down highlights on the rope, providing a strong shine on the threads following the light source.
