This is a departure from my usual painting style. My physical artwork is primarily in watercolor and gouache, but rarely in true watercolor style in digital work. One morning, I suddenly felt the urge to paint on my iPad. I worked fast, without pre-planning or sketching, and it simply happened. I found it relaxing to create in this fashion, and when I view it on printed paper in a frame, I find the image calming.

This pastel seascape blends pink, blue, cream, pale yellow, and subtle purple. The sun and boat are the only structures, while the rest is watercolor washes. It reflects my mood during its creation.

Artist’s Process:

This free-flowing work was created in Procreate on an 13” iPad Pro M5 with an Apple Pencil Pro. Layers were used for individual watercolor washes in pastels of pink, blue, cream, and light yellow, with the sun and boat on separate layers. The sky and water layers merged for color blending, and the sun merged and blended at the bottom into the water. The boat layer was carefully placed below the horizon. Completed in one hour.

Challenge: A new and very different digital painting style for me, this was a successful experiment.
