Lenten Rose in Blue Vase — Still Life.
This piece, Lenten Rose in Blue Vase — Still Life, was inspired by this stunning plant blooming in Shadowmyst Art’s garden. The flower is a delicate 5 petal bloom and is an early bloomer beginning its summer cycle in late March to early April on Long Island bring a welcome sign of spring while the landscape is still in winter grays and browns. Blooming profusely into July it brings joy to any garden.
Paired with this lovely cream colored bloom with magenta edges and streaks on the petals is the matte ceramic blue vase holding the flower, a uniques antique incense burner and a hand painted china trinket box. This trio is reminiscent of an early more romantic time and graces the space it occupies with a timeless feel.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:
Lenten Rose in Blue Vase, Still Live was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. As with every piece in the gallery, work began with a detailed sketch of the subject and environment, followed by a color-blocking, layer to establish base tones creating an underpainting. From there, a multi-layer process refined values and rendered detail in the leaves, flower petals and stems. A different approach was required for the other objects in the still life like the matte finished on the pottery vase, the cutouts in the lid of the incense burner and the painted china trinket box each requiring the same detailed approach to the design but different brushes and construction to create their unique surfaces.
CHALLENGE:
The incense burner in this still life was the most challenging in this piece. A unique design consisting of multiple materials in the same object but also creating the venting cutouts in the lid. A multiple layer technique was used to create each section of the burner providing the freedom to work out the different materials of the burner separately then merger them together in the end to create the finished work.
