Padja is a pedigree Staffordshire Terrier with a story as warm as her personality. When her original owner could no longer keep her, Padja found her way to a new family — her Mom, Trish, and her sister, Chriss. She settled in as though she’d always belonged there. Charming, affectionate, and endlessly devoted, Padja is equally at home cuddling on the couch or showing off her tricks. This portrait was commissioned to celebrate that bond.

ARTIST’S PROCESS: This portrait was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro with Apple Pencil Pro. The process begins with careful structural drawing to establish accurate proportions and likeness, followed by layered color blocking and progressive value refinement. Detail passes address the textures unique to each subject — in Padja’s case, her short, glossy black coat, the subtle dappling on her chest, the warmth in her amber eyes, and the fine metalwork of her collar tags. The background faithfully reflects the client’s reference photo, grounding Padja in the sunny outdoor setting where she feels most at home.

CHALLENGE: One of portraiture’s most demanding subjects is a predominantly black animal. Black absorbs light rather than reflecting it, leaving almost no natural color variation to work with. Building dimension and life requires carefully observing subtle value shifts — cool blue-grey highlights, warm reflected tones, and the unique dappling that makes Padja an individual rather than simply a dark silhouette. The goal was not to paint black, but to paint light on black — and to let her personality emerge from that darkness.
