ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Autumn’s Edge was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The piece was inspired by a reference photo taken on a nature walk, then reimagined in a more textured, abstract direction. The fallen leaves were built with fine outlined linework and layered color for a more illustrative quality, while the duckweed was rendered with a granular, stippled texture to capture its dense, matted surface — an intentional contrast between the two elements. A single feather, drawn from the original reference photo, was added to anchor the piece to its source. Soft diagonal light rays were layered across the moss to bring warmth and depth to the composition.

CHALLENGE:

Balancing two distinct rendering styles within one composition — the fine, outlined leaves and the granular, textured duckweed — without one overpowering the other was the central challenge. Careful attention to value and color saturation kept the leaves visually grounded against the moss’s dense texture, while the added light rays helped unify the piece’s overall mood without disrupting either technique.
