Rooster is a pedigree German Shepherd — mostly black with warm sable undertones that catch the light when he moves, which is almost always.

He belongs to his dad completely. That bond is the center of his world, and everything else — the yard, the running, the herding ball nearly as big as he is — radiates outward from it.

The blue herding ball is Rooster’s prize possession and his favorite challenge. He will body-check it, chase it, and stand over it with exactly the proprietary satisfaction you see here. He also runs the perimeter of the property at full speed, just because he can.

This portrait was commissioned to capture Rooster exactly as his dad sees him — at full throttle, in his yard, completely himself.

ARTIST’S PROCESS: Painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil Pro, this commission is the most compositionally complex in this portfolio — a full-body portrait of a large dog in an active pose, set within a fully realized outdoor environment.

Unlike close-cropped head portraits, a full-body composition requires correct skeletal proportion, weight distribution, and the suggestion of motion across the entire figure. The structural drawing phase was extended to establish Rooster’s pose accurately before any rendering began.

The predominantly black coat was built from layered warm and cool tones — sable browns beneath surface blacks — to ensure the fur reads as three-dimensional rather than flat. The herding ball required a different approach entirely: smooth spherical rendering with careful light placement to make it read as a solid, heavy object under Rooster’s paw.

The background — a lush landscaped yard under a partly cloudy sky — was developed from client-provided reference photos and painted with enough detail to place Rooster convincingly in his own environment without competing with the portrait itself.

CHALLENGE: A full-body portrait of a dark-coated dog in motion presents challenges a head portrait doesn’t. Proportion and pose accuracy become critical across the entire figure — an error in shoulder, hip, or leg placement that might be hidden in a cropped composition is fully exposed here. Rooster’s dynamic stance, with one paw raised onto the ball and his weight shifted forward, required careful structural drawing to read as physically convincing rather than stiff or posed.

The predominantly black coat compounded the difficulty: dark fur against a shadowed lower body risks losing form entirely, requiring deliberate value management to keep Rooster’s legs, the ball, and the ground distinct from one another. The fully rendered landscape background added a final balancing act — every element needed to feel complete and real without pulling attention away from Rooster himself.
