Artist’s Process:
Created entirely in Procreate on a 13” iPad Pro M5 with an Apple Pencil Pro, this work replicates traditional painting’s depth and texture through layered digital brushwork. Each portrait starts with structural drawing, followed by color blocking, value refinement, and detail work on skin, hair, and light using multiple Procreate layers and brushes. The background is an atmospheric impressionistic scene, suggesting an outdoor gathering or meeting of friends. Particular attention was given to the beard and mustache — individual hair strands rendered across multiple layers to achieve the salt-and-pepper texture and directional growth.
Challenge:
The navy flat cap required separate fabric texture work to read as cloth rather than painted surface. The background palette was chosen to echo the cap’s blue tones, creating a color harmony that ties the composition together.
