Caricature Fatso the Hamster — Custom Commission. Fatso was a pet hamster who loved sunflower seeds and would hang out on the coffee table and sip at his owner’s beer apparently getting a little tipsy in the process. The Client shared the story with me and requested a caricature of his beloved pet. The original was a watercolor painting created in 1970 which had since yellowed and faded. The client requested a restoration of the original and it was decided that a recreation of the original would be the best solution.
Fatso was recreated in Procreate in watercolor style to match the original and printed on 11 x 14″ fine art Gicglée paper. This print, framed and hung on the client’s wall now brings back great memories of Fatso’s time with his owner.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Caricature Fatso the Hamster was painted in Procreate on a 13-inch iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The process began with a sketch in Procreate of the original watercolor painting provided by the client.
Following the original watercolor medium of the original a light coffee color oval fill background was created on a layer below the semi-transparent sketch layer. On layers above the background layer color blocking was set for the hamster, beer bottle, condensation on the table surface and other element of the composition.

On layers above the color blocked sections digital brushwork builds the depth and texture of traditional watercolor painting and adds the details of the hamster’s fur, Sunflower seeds and bag, beer bottle and label and each element of the original painting. Remaining details were created on new layers in an “Inking” style with the Procreate Inking “Fine Tip” brush adding the label text and illustrations, seed bag printing, defining the hamster’s features, fur strands, and the bottle cap outline above the watercolor layers.
