ARTIST’S PROCESS:
Undaunted was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil Pro, through layered digital brushwork across skin, hair, and fabric detail. The piece begins with a detailed sketch followed by color blocking on a separate layer using a mid tone range of each section’s main color. Additional layers were then utilized to add shading, highlights, texture and fine details of the features, hair and fabrics. The green draped background was rendered with fold, sheen, and shadow — its movement referencing classical portrait backdrops while creating color harmony with the royal blue top. The flowing fabric adds life and environment to the composed stillness of the subject. Amber eye rendering with natural catchlight carries the quiet determination of the title.
CHALLENGE:
Dual fabric rendering — the green draped background and royal blue top required distinctly different fabric treatments in the same piece. The background drape needed visible fold structure and sheen suggesting heavy fabric, while the blue top required a softer drape and lighter sheen — each textile reading as a different material. Each fabric was created on its own layer following the detailed sketch. The fabric texture was added to the blue top using a Procreate fabric brush modified to add a subtle linen texture across the surface of the blouse. The Procreate Liquify tool was used to nudge the applied texture to move with the folds that were created with Procreate Soft Round brush on the layer below. The fabric of the curtains was created from multiple layer passes of watercolor washes in multiple color temperatures creating the light and dark of the folds moving in the directions that the curtains hang.
