Pet Portrait Jackie, full name Madam Jaclyn Meownay, is a domestic short-hair rescue cat with the bold, striking coloring of a Caliby described as a blend of “calico” and “tabby,” representing a combination of both fur patterns. These cats have the colors of a calico and the stripes, swirls, or spots of a tabby. One of the most charming things about calico cats is that they’re all unique. You’ll never find two calicos with exactly the same markings. You’ll also be hard-pressed to find a male calico. Due to the specific genes that trigger their color combination, almost all calico cats are female.
Jackie carries the strong-willed personality calico cats are known for in the cat world as “cattitude” — she may be the youngest in her family, but she sets the house rules.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:

Madam Jaclyn Meownay was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. The portrait began with structural drawing to establish her facial proportions and expression, followed by color blocking to map the complex interplay of black, orange, and tan across her tabby-calico coat. Fine detail work brought out the individual strokes of fur direction and the striking clarity of her green eyes, with a softly patterned botanical background chosen to complement her warm coloring without competing with her expression.

CHALLENGE:

Jackie’s coat combines three colors in an active tabby striping pattern across her face, which risked competing with her eyes for visual attention. The challenge was rendering the tabby markings with enough individual detail to read as authentic fur, while keeping value and contrast controlled enough that her striking green eyes remained the clear focal point rather than getting lost in the coat’s complexity.
