Artist’s Process:
Quiet Resolve was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro with Apple Pencil Pro. The face was built first to establish the quiet intensity of the expression, with particular attention to the eyes and the subtle set of the jaw that carries the piece’s emotional weight. Hair was developed in soft directional strokes to catch warm highlights against the cooler, muted background, and skin tones were layered to keep the lighting natural rather than dramatic — supporting the calm rather than competing with it.
Challenge:
The greatest challenge was conveying resolve through stillness alone — with no dramatic lighting or exaggerated expression to lean on, every cue had to come from small details: the set of the jaw, the steadiness of the eyes, the slight asymmetry of the mouth. Restraint like this is harder to paint convincingly than emotion that announces itself.
