Berry Awesome Hardy Hibiscus Buds is a painting of the beginning of the blooming process of this stunning perennial plant that produces blooms ranging from white to deep red. The Summerific® ‘Berry Awesome’ Hardy Hibiscus (rose mallow) is a compact perennial that features large, flat “dinner-plate” lavender-pink flowers with deep red eyes. It grows to a height of 4 feet and a width of up to 5 feet, with dense, midnight-green foliage. The plant blooms continuously from midsummer through early fall. When buds appear on the branches, it indicates that the Summer show is about to begin. Hardy Hibiscus, like its cousin, the Tropical Hibiscus, it is a striking addition to any garden.

ARTIST’S PROCESS:
Berry Awesome Hardy Hibiscus Buds was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This artwork replicates the depth and texture of traditional painting using layered digital brushwork. The composition commenced with a detailed structural drawing of the bud pods (Calyx), emerging raspberry petals, and the dark green foliage. Subsequently, color blocking, value refinement, and intricate texture work were applied to the sepals of the calyx, emerging petals, and leaves. The background was presented as a simple blue sky with subtle cloud suggestions, effectively placing the subject within its outdoor environment without detracting from the central focus of the piece. This expressionistic sky background was painted using the Procreate medium soft Airbrush and created in a watercolor wash style.
CHALLENGE:
The Hardy Hibiscus buds on this plant are large and appear in clusters of acorn-shaped structures with sharply pointed tips and ribbed sides. The Calyx, or bud casing, consists of multiple closed leaf-like Sepals that open only when the flower is ready to bloom. The entire Calyx is covered in a fine sheen of tiny white hairs. The Calyx was painted first, in multiple layers, establishing shade and light before adding the hair layer. Because the Sepals are soft and opaque, a Gouache-style medium with a soft flat-edged Procreate brush set to 2% size and 75% opacity achieved the desired texture. The fine hairs were then painted on a new layer with a modified thin, multi-lined Procreate brush set to 50% opacity and 1% size. The watercolor medium was then returned to for a delicate, transparent finish applied in careful, short strokes.
