She holds the mug close, her gaze drifting somewhere warm and private. In A Quiet Moment, an elder woman’s expression — a soft smile, lines earned with time, eyes lifted toward an unseen thought — becomes the entire story. This painterly realist portrait celebrates the dignity and inner life of age, rendered in rich earth tones against a deep olive ground. It is a study in stillness: the kind of peace that doesn’t announce itself.
Artist’s Process:
Painted entirely in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro M5 with Apple Pencil Pro. The portrait was built from a structural drawing establishing proportion and facial planes, followed by layered color blocking in warm earth tones. Particular attention was given to the skin’s luminosity — developing the mid-tones and shadows to render the natural contours of age with accuracy and respect. The tightly coiled grey hair was rendered strand by strand to contrast the softness of the expression. Final passes refined light on the face, hands, and mug.
Challenge:
The greatest challenge was painting aged skin that feels luminous and alive rather than mapped or heavy. Every wrinkle carries the facial structure underneath it — too much contrast flattens the form; too little loses the character entirely. Each line was built up gradually through layered glazing, keeping the skin warm and dimensional while honoring the natural architecture of the face.
