Emperor Penguin Family – Commissioned Work Example

This commissioned Emperor Penguin family portrait was created as a birthday gift for a young boy with a deep love of penguins. Working closely with the client to develop the composition, the piece captures a tender family moment — one adult bowed protectively toward its chick, the other standing watch. The finished painting was framed and presented as a gift, delighting its young recipient.

ARTIST’S PROCESS: Emperor Penguin Family was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This technique replicates traditional painting’s depth and texture through layered digital brushwork. The process began with careful structural drawing, followed by multiple rounds of color blocking, value refinement, and detail work on this species’ unique feather texture to capture its appearance and temperament. Shadow and light were built up using multiple Procreate layers and specific brushes, and the background was created to reflect the species’ natural habitat, reinforcing the story being told.

CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge was composing three figures — two adults and a chick — into a single balanced scene without the arrangement feeling static or symmetrical. The solution was an asymmetrical triangle composition: one adult bows down toward the chick while the second stands upright, creating a natural sense of protective interaction and visual movement between the three figures rather than a stiff, evenly-spaced row.
