A Timeless Smile – Original Portrait

A Timeless Smile is a formal portrait celebrating modern, mature beauty — a study in contrast between classic elegance and contemporary style. As an original composition rather than a client commission, this piece was created from a mood board, allowing full creative freedom in expression, styling, and lighting.

ARTIST’S PROCESS: A Timeless Smile was painted in Procreate on a 13″ iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil Pro. This technique replicates traditional painting’s depth and texture through layered digital brushwork. As an original portrait created from a mood board rather than a specific reference photo, the composition began with careful structural drawing to establish the subject’s features and modern silver bob haircut, followed by multiple rounds of color blocking, value refinement, and detail work on hair and skin texture to capture a radiant, happy expression. Shadow and light were built up using multiple Procreate layers and specific brushes, with a dark chiaroscuro background chosen to isolate the subject and draw full attention to her luminous hair and expression.

CHALLENGE: Rendering silver hair convincingly is a unique challenge — without careful layering, it can easily read as flat grey rather than luminous. The hair was built up in multiple stages, beginning with a sketch followed by a formative layer of medium-to-slightly-darker grey strands to establish hairstyle direction and provide shading beneath the lighter layers to come. A soft, 100%-opacity wash of lighter grey was added on a layer beneath the formative layer to fill out the volume of the hair. A new layer above was then used to add near-white strands following the same direction as the formative layer, followed by another layer adding pure white strands in the areas that would catch the most light. A final layer used Procreate’s “Add” blend mode at 40% opacity to lay down additional near-white strands, carefully placing extra highlights exactly where needed to bring the silver hair to life.
